Role Orientation: Field Tech

1. Purpose of the Role

Field Techs / LENS Techs support the clinical team by providing hands-on services (like LENS neurofeedback or other protocols), gathering data, and helping clients engage in care ordered by NPs or clinicians.

2. Primary Duties

  • Deliver LENS (and any other approved tech-level services) as ordered by NPs or supervising clinicians and according to protocols.
  • Prepare treatment rooms and equipment; ensure cleanliness and proper function.
  • Take and document basic data (e.g., vitals, standardized measures, session notes within template).
  • Educate clients briefly about what to expect from tech-level services (within training).
  • Coordinate scheduling, reminders, or follow-up related to tech services (within role).
  • Document each session accurately in the EHR using the correct template.
  • Communicate clinically relevant observations to the supervising NP/clinician.

3. Key Systems & Tools

  • EHR for documenting sessions
  • LENS system and related hardware/software
  • Other tools (e.g., RightEye, screening tools) if applicable
  • Internal messaging systems for communication with NPs and therapists

4. Supervision & Chain of Command

  • Clinical direction: NP / supervising clinician who orders protocols
  • Operational oversight: site lead or COO
  • Risk/safety escalation: supervising NP, Clinical Director, or immediate supervisor

You should have regular contact with your supervising NP/clinician to review protocols and client progress.

5. Scope & Boundaries

You can:

  • Execute protocols as written and trained
  • Observe and report client responses and concerns
  • Provide basic, scripted education about the services you deliver

You must not:

  • Change protocols on your own without NP/clinician direction
  • Interpret results as diagnoses or make promises about outcomes
  • Provide psychotherapy or medication advice

6. RHC & Behavioral Health Connection

  • Many of the clients you work with will be RHC clients or referred by RHC providers.
  • Your work often happens “incident to” an RHC visit or NP order.
  • Your documentation supports the overall RHC encounter and clinical decision-making.

7. Success in This Role Looks Like

  • Protocols are followed accurately and consistently.
  • Rooms and equipment are clean, safe, and ready for use.
  • Documentation is complete, clear, and on time.
  • NPs and therapists trust your observations and communication.
  • Clients feel informed, safe, and supported during tech-level services.
